Keep Your Racks Organized

A well-organized rack makes new hardware easier to install, connections easier to trace, and incidents faster to resolve. Plan before filling every available rack unit.

A layout that scales

  1. Decide where servers, switches, gateways, and other components belong before mounting them.
  2. Place network switches near the top and their connected servers below.
  3. Use the same basic layout across racks so equipment stays easy to find.
  4. Leave free rack units for expansion instead of filling every slot immediately.
  5. Keep cable paths clear and use consistent cable colors.
  6. Give racks and components names that reveal their role and location.

Recommended approach

Use a consistent layout, group related servers, keep switches easy to find, and preserve room for future expansion. The goal is clarity, not a perfect-looking rack on day one.
